Jon and I had a great conversation a few weeks ago, and since it literally went all over the damn place for 2.5+ hours, it took me a minute to edit to get it down to a listen-worthy 50 mins. As you can probably relate, when you sit down for a chat with your Exeter roommate, there’s a lot to talk about.
After Exeter, Jon earned his PhD in Geology at UConn and went straight into teaching at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. He’s had a blessed life with wife Kristen and son Silas, and has continued to play the guitar, which he learned under Bob Squires in the Music Department at PEA. Tracks from his “Dad Band”, the Rolangs, on Spotify are embedded below. Some of you may remember his senior year band “Roadkill”, fronted by Dan Klaus, with Jon on Guitar and Whitney Tracy on Bass, and sometimes Ted DeBonis on Guitar as well, with ‘93 Leo Kim on drums. We talked about an epic basement concert in Wentworth in the spring of 1992. And also a string of performances including “Hotel California” with Bob’s group - The Exeter Association of Rock.
We talked about Harkness. There was mention of JV Lax, Elm Street, and Wetherall (but neither of us really remembers where Wetherall actually was on campus). There was a long conversation about adult things that a geologist and Earth scientist like Jon can educates us about - like climate change, but that shit got too heavy, and I had to take the edit out for another day. I would rather talk about Exeter Association of Rock, so hope you’re ok with that. :-). Other good stories, unfortunately, like excessive memberships to Columbia House’s 8 CDs-for-a-penny offer, my first listen ever of the Beatles White Album on Jon’s stereo, and more were sacrified to the edit floor. We’ll dredge those up another day.
And, oh yes, Christina Minicucci was nominated to come onto the pod to talk about being a Massachusetts State legislator and other things that happened in Amen Hall. Tag - you’re it, Cucci.
You can find Jon on LinkedIn, Facebook, or a weekend Rolangs gig somewhere in Connecticut. BTW in case you were wondering WTF a Rolang is - it’s a zombie-like creature from Tibetan folklore. Jon - that’s better than “Roadkill”, but you have some explaining to do on that one.
Hope you enjoy this episode of the Exeter Class of ‘92 Podcast!
